Tagging accounts and adding audio on Instagram

What a tag actually does on each format

This is the part worth reading first, because Instagram behaves differently depending on what you are posting, and the difference is not obvious.

FormatWhat tagging does
Photo postThe tag is shown on the photo. Viewers tap the image to reveal it and can tap through to the profile. You choose where it sits.
ReelNothing is shown on the video. The account is notified and the reel appears in their Tagged tab.
StoryNothing is shown on the video. The account is notified and gets the “add this to your story” prompt.

That is Instagram’s own behaviour, not a limitation of Autoposter — no scheduling tool can draw a tag on a reel or a story.

If you want a visible, tappable link on a reel

Two things do work, and you already have both:

  • Collaborators — both usernames appear on the reel itself and it posts to both audiences. They have to accept.
  • @mention in the caption — tappable, instant, no acceptance needed. Creator tags fill the right handle in automatically.

Tagging accounts

  1. Create your post and select your Instagram account.
  2. Open the Instagram options and find Tagged accounts.
  3. Type a username and press Enter. Accounts you have tagged before are suggested as you type.

Check for the green tick. Every tag is checked against Instagram as you add it. A green tick means Instagram can see that account. An amber question mark means we could not confirm it — usually a private account, a personal (non-business) account, or a typo. If Instagram cannot find any one of the accounts you tagged it refuses the whole post, and it does not say which handle was the problem. Fix an amber tag before you schedule.

Placing a tag on a photo

On a photo post you will see the image below the tag box with each tag on it. Drag a tag to move it. On a carousel, pick the photo you want using the thumbnails — each photo carries its own tags, and the small number on a thumbnail tells you how many it has.

How many you can tag

  • Photo post: up to 20 accounts
  • Reel: up to 10 accounts
  • Story: up to 10 accounts

Audio on reels

You can attach a track to a reel before it publishes, chosen from Instagram’s own catalogue.

  1. Set the post type to Reel.
  2. Under Audio, choose Music or Original sounds.
  3. Search, or leave the box empty to browse what is trending.
  4. Press Play to hear a track, then Use to attach it.
  5. Press play on the post preview to hear it over your clip.

Music vs original sounds

  • Music is Instagram’s royalty-free Sound Collection — cleared for use and safe from copyright claims.
  • Original sounds are tracks created by other accounts, which is what most trends actually run on.

The catalogue Instagram offers to scheduling tools is not always identical to what you see browsing the app on your phone. If a specific track is missing, that is Instagram limiting what it shares, not a fault with your account.

Volume

Once a track is attached you get two sliders: Music volume and Original video volume. Both start at 100. Drop the video volume to zero for music only, or mix the two if your clip has speech worth keeping. Both apply live to the preview.

The preview is an approximation. Instagram does not let any tool render a finished reel with its audio attached, so the preview plays your clip and the track together in your browser. It shows you the balance, but it is not Instagram’s own output.

Audio is reels only

Instagram does not allow a track to be added to a story, a photo post or a carousel through any scheduling tool, so the picker only appears on reels. If you choose a track and then switch the post to a story, we remove it and tell you why.

If the audio section is missing

Instagram only offers audio to accounts connected through Facebook. If your Instagram account was connected directly, without a Facebook Page, the Audio section will not appear. Tagging still works as normal.
