Audience & Geography

Overview

The Audience tab on the analytics dashboard answers a different question from the rest of the screen. The other tabs tell you how your posts performed. This one tells you who is watching — which countries and cities they are in, how old they are, and whether they follow you yet.

Stories

Instagram deletes story insights when the story expires, and there is no way to ask for them afterwards. So we check every few hours while your stories are live and keep what we find permanently. The Overview tab shows how many stories we captured, their views and replies, and two numbers unique to stories: profile visits and follows that came directly from them. Stories are the only content type Instagram will attribute those to.

Two things follow from this. Stories posted before you connected the account cannot be recovered. And the count is “stories we caught” rather than everything you posted — a story that went up and expired entirely between two checks will be missing.

Follower Churn

Under the followers graph you will see follows gained and lost alongside the net figure. This matters because net growth hides the story: gaining 2,000 followers because 12,000 joined and 10,000 left is a very different situation from 2,500 joining and 500 leaving, and it calls for a different response.

Reach by Format

On the Audience tab, how much reach each kind of content earned: reels, stories, carousels and photo posts. Use it to decide what to make more of.

Where To Find It

The numbers are split across two tabs, because they update at different speeds:

  • Overview tab — profile visits, link clicks, and views split by follower vs non-follower, plus your Discovery percentage. These refresh several times a day, so they sit with your other headline numbers.
  • Audience tab — the country, city, age and gender breakdown. These are a weekly snapshot.

Why Discovery Matters Most

If almost all your views come from existing followers, your content is being served to the same people over and over — comfortable, but it will not grow the account. A high share of non-follower views means the platform is pushing your work to new people. Watch this number when you change your posting style: it moves before follower count does.

Not Every Platform Reports the Same Things

This is the part worth understanding, because a missing breakdown is usually the platform, not us.

  • Instagram — everything: country, city, age, gender, profile visits, link clicks and the follower/non-follower split.
  • Facebook — country, city and profile visits only. Facebook stopped sharing age and gender for Pages in 2026 and offered no replacement, so no tool can show it any more.
  • Threads — country, city, age, gender, profile visits and link clicks.
  • YouTube — country, age and gender, reported as percentages rather than numbers of people. You will need to reconnect the account once to grant access to this data.
  • TikTok, X, Pinterest, Bluesky, Telegram — these platforms do not share audience information through their APIs, so the Audience tab does not appear for them.

The 100-Follower Rule

Every platform that shares this data withholds it until an account has at least 100 followers. This protects the privacy of small accounts — with only a handful of followers, a city breakdown could identify individual people. If a newer account shows an empty Audience tab, this is usually why.

How Fresh Is It?

The country, city, age and gender breakdown refreshes once a week, and the Audience tab tells you the date of the snapshot it is showing. This is deliberate: platforms report these as lifetime totals rather than daily figures, so they shift over weeks and months, not overnight.

Profile visits, link clicks and the follower split refresh several times a day.

Why the date range does not change some numbers

On Instagram, profile visits, link clicks and the follower/non-follower split are only published as a rolling 30-day total. Instagram does not offer them day by day, so picking “7 days” at the top of the dashboard cannot narrow them — they will always describe the last 30 days, and the cards say so underneath. Facebook profile visits are reported daily, so those do follow the date range you choose.

Reconnecting YouTube

YouTube audience data needs a permission we did not previously ask for. Existing YouTube connections keep posting exactly as they do now — nothing breaks. But the Audience tab stays empty until you disconnect and reconnect the channel, which grants read-only access to your channel analytics. You can do this whenever suits you.
