How to Link Facebook & Instagram

Why This Is Needed

Instagram uses Facebook's technology behind the scenes. To connect Instagram to any third-party scheduling tool (including Autoposter), your Instagram needs to be:

  1. A Professional Account (Business or Creator)
  2. Linked to a Facebook Business Page

This is a requirement from Meta (the company behind both platforms), not something specific to Autoposter. See Meta's official guide: Connect or disconnect your Instagram account and a Facebook Page.

📱 Mobile Setup (iPhone / Android)

This is the easiest way if you mainly use Instagram on your phone.

Step 1: Switch to a Professional Account

If your Instagram is already a Business or Creator account, skip to Step 2.

  1. Open the Instagram app
  2. Tap your profile picture (bottom right)
  3. Tap the ☰ menu (top right) → Settings and privacy
  4. Scroll down to Account type and tools
  5. Tap Switch to professional account
  6. Choose Business or Creator — either works with Autoposter
  7. Select a category that fits your content and tap Done

  2. Tap the ☰ menu → Pages
  3. Tap Create
  4. Enter a page name (can be your creator name) and category
  5. Tap Create Page

Step 3: Link Instagram to the Facebook Page

From the Instagram app:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile
  2. Tap Edit profile
  3. Tap Page (under "Profile information")
  4. Select Connect or create a Facebook Page
  5. Choose the Facebook Page you just created (or an existing one)
  6. Tap Done

Step 4: Connect in Autoposter

  1. Open Autoposter in your phone's browser (or use a computer)
  2. Go to Accounts → tap + → select Instagram
  3. Facebook will ask you to log in — select the Page you linked
  4. Grant all permissions (publishing, insights, etc.)
  5. Your Instagram account should now appear in Autoposter

💻 Desktop Setup (PC / Laptop)

Use this method if you prefer setting things up on a computer via Meta Business Suite.

Step 1: Switch to a Professional Account

This step must be done on the Instagram mobile app — it's not available on desktop. Follow the mobile Step 1 above, then continue here.

Step 2: Create a Facebook Page (if you don't have one)

  1. Go to facebook.com/pages/create
  2. Enter your page name and category
  3. Click Create Page
  4. Add a profile photo and cover image (optional but recommended)

Troubleshooting

"No Instagram accounts found"

  • Your Instagram is not linked to the Facebook Page you selected during connection
  • Check the link exists in both your Instagram app (Edit Profile → Page) and your Facebook Page settings (Linked Accounts)

Posts to Instagram suddenly fail, but the account still looks connected

If every Instagram post starts failing with a message about the account no longer being linked to its Facebook Page as a professional account, the link between the two has been loosened or removed on Meta's side. This usually happens after a change in Accounts Center or in the Page's settings — Instagram keeps a looser link that lets tools read your account (which is why it still shows as connected and your stats keep updating) but no longer lets anything be published.

  1. Open your Facebook Page → Settings → Linked accounts → Instagram and connect your Instagram account. In Meta Business Suite the same option is under Settings → Instagram accounts.
  2. Check the Instagram side too: Instagram app → Edit profile → Page should show that Facebook Page.
  3. Back in Autoposter, go to Accounts and reconnect Instagram so we pick up the restored link.
  4. Reschedule any posts that failed — they won't retry on their own.

Nothing about your content caused this, and no posts went out while it was broken. If you see the same message again within a few days, ask whoever else manages the Page whether they changed anything in Accounts Center.

Reels fail with "Meta has placed a restriction", but photos and stories still post

This means Meta has put a restriction on the Facebook Page or account linked to your Instagram. While it is in place, Instagram refuses reels — trial reels included — through any posting tool, but usually still accepts photos, carousels and stories. That is why some of your posts go out and others don't.

It is a decision on Meta's side, so reconnecting in Autoposter or re-uploading the video won't help, and we can't lift it for you. What does help:

  1. In the Instagram app, open your profile → menu → Settings and activity → Account status. Anything listed there can be appealed from that screen.
  2. Check the linked Facebook Page too: in Meta Business Suite, look at the Page's status and appeal anything listed.
  3. Once Meta clears the restriction, reels publish normally again. Reschedule the reels that failed — they won't retry on their own.

Until it is cleared, you can keep posting photos, carousels and stories as usual. If you rely on reels, pausing your reel schedule avoids a pile of failed posts to clean up afterwards.

"Permissions error"

  • You must be an admin of the Facebook Page — editor or moderator roles don't have enough access
  • Try disconnecting in Autoposter and reconnecting, granting all permissions

Still not working?

  • Clear your browser cookies for autoposter.typamanagement.com and try in an incognito/private window
  • Make sure your Instagram is set to Business or Creator (not Personal)
  • If you recently changed your Instagram password, you may need to re-link in Meta Business Suite
  • Check Meta's status page if the connection keeps failing — occasional outages can affect linking
